After a tumultuous grad school experience, I finally received my Ph.D. diploma and soon after became a tenure-track professor. This job offer had nothing to do with skills, but only with whatever random candidate characteristics the search committee desired. I have continued to watch higher ed crumble – adjunct exploitation and administrative bloat, overenrolled courses, and ridiculous levels of student loan debt. In addition, both part-time and full-time professors are increasingly expected to dedicate their entire lives to their jobs.
In fact, I am doing just that – my life is my work. Time for self-growth and family are non-existent, especially since my partner and I live so many hundreds of miles apart.
So I finally jumped off the track…and we’ll see where I land!
